The BAFTAs ceremony had begun earlier in the afternoon, giving production staff time to edit the footage down to fit the two hour time slot.

It also meant they could edit out any swear words, however, one managed to sneak through.

It occurred before 7pm when Sophie Willan took to the stage after being announced the winner in the Female Performance In A Comedy Programme category.

Sophie won for her role in Alma’s Not Normal – which she also writes – and she was clearly stunned to have triumphed in such a competitive category.

As she hugged presenters Lee Mack and Chris McCausland, she said: “Holy s**t”.

As she took the award from Chris she appeared to realise she had cursed and said: “I’m sorry, excuse me.”

She then began her speech by saying: “I can’t believe this, I wasn’t expecting that!”

However, her speech was reportedly full of expletives and had to be heavily edited according to members of the audience.

While the majority of viewers were thrilled about her win, some were shocked by the swear word popping up over two hours before the 9pm watershed.

One wrote on Twitter: “Good bit of swearing at 6:50pm on the BBC #BAFTAs.”

Another added: “the swearing it’s not even 7pm yet.”

A thid tweeted: “A(nother) BAFTA for @sophiewillan
?! I love to bloody see it. Also, they’re editing bits out, but they kept in her “Holy s**t” which I think is perfect. #BAFTATV #BAFTAs.”
