‘You’d want to play for him’

MANCHESTER UNITED icon Nicky Butt has urged the club to NOT appoint Ajax boss Erik ten Hag in the summer.

SunSport understands the Dutchman is the favourite to succeed interim Ralf Rangnick at Old Trafford at the end of the season.

The 52-year-old was interviewed for the United job last week, though no offer has yet been sent to Ten Hag.

United’s failure to offer him a contract is said to have shocked the ex-FC Twente centre-back.

According to the Mirror, despite impressing United with his vision for the club, their failure to open talks has stunned him.

Ten Hag’s compatriot and former Red Devils boss Louis Van Gaal has advised him not to take charge at the Theatre of Dreams.

Van Gaal believes Ten Hag should steer clear of United because they are a “commercial club” as opposed to a football one.

And now United have been warned against appointing Ten Hag by ex-midfielder and coach Butt.

Butt, who won six Premier League titles at United, has declared he wants Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino instead.

Pochettino is understood to also be a target, with it believed he is on board over a return to the Premier League.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, Butt said: “United need stability.

“They can’t keep having interim managers or learners in very powerful positions.

“They need people who’ve been there, seen it and done it.

“I’d go all-out to get Mauricio Pochettino as manager.

“He’s proven in the Premier League, he’s young and enthusiastic, his style of play would suit United and his backroom staff seem switched on.

“I met him a couple of times at Spurs’ training ground and had lunch. You’d want to play for him.”
