Atletico Madrid manager Diego’s father dies in Argentina as club pay emotional tribute

CARLOS SIMEONE, the father of Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone, has died at the age of 80.

The man, who is also the grandfather of Atletico Madrid B striker Giuliano Simeone, was confirmed to have passed away after a statement was released on the club website.

He died in his home country of Argentina on Friday – in the capital Buenos Aires.

A statement from the club read: “The father of our coach, Diego Pablo Simeone, and grandfather’s Giuliano Simeone, Atlético de Madrid B striker, passed away in Buenos Aires.

“Today is a sad day for the Red & White family. Our club is in mourning for the death of Carlos Simeone, father of our coach Diego Pablo Simeone, and grandfather’s Giuliano Simeone, Atlético de Madrid B striker.

“In his memory, the Wanda Metropolitano flag will be at half-mast.

“Our president Enrique Cerezo; the CEO, Miguel Angel Gil Marín; the Board of Directors and all the employees, would like to convey its most sincere condolences to the family of our coach for such an irreparable loss.

“May he rest in peace.”

Rivals Real Madrid also paid their respects.

A club statement read: “Real Madrid CF, its President and its Management deeply regret the loss of Carlos Simeone, father of Diego Pablo Simeone, coach of Club Atletico de Madrid.

“Real Madrid would like to express their deepest condolences and send their full support to his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace.”

Reacting to the news on social media, one user said: “Rest in peace Carlos Simeone. All our condolences to the @Simeone family.”

While another added: “RIP sir. Hope you are reborn in a better world.”

And a third said: “Rest in peace Carlos. Passing on my wishes to all the Simeone family.”

The Simeone family – including Atletico boss Diego – will now be given time to mourn the loss of Carlos.

Atletico do not play again until April 2 due to the international break – meaning Diego will have some time to process his father’s death.

The La Liga champions will face Alaves at home when domestic football returns next month.
