Mum and newborn baby found dead next to each other at Travelodge

A MUM and a newborn baby have been found dead next to each other at a Travelodge.

The tragic woman and her child – who had been delivered in the hotel room – were discovered in the Leicester City Centre Travelodge yesterday afternoon.

The mum and a newborn baby were found dead at the Travelodge

They were found unresponsive in one of the hotel’s rooms just before 3pm.

Several ambulances and emergency services rushed to the scene at the Haymarket Shopping Centre yesterday.

The mum and newborn were taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary after being found by staff at the hotel.

But despite the best efforts of paramedics and doctors, the tot and mum were pronounced dead soon after their arrival.

An investigation has now been launched into the tragic double death – but police confirmed it’s not being treated as suspicious.

One witnesses said that he had been in the city centre when he saw the desperate fight to save the mother and baby.

He said people were administering CPR to both of them on the rooftop car park.

The man told LeicestershireLive: “It has to be the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever seen.

“There were paramedics running up the ramp of the multi-storey car park.

“I realised it was because the ambulances couldn’t get to the rooftop and were still down in the street.

“Not long afterwards, I saw a woman being brought out of the hotel on an ambulance trolley.

“Behind her, medics were carrying out a baby. I then noticed that the paramedics were administering CPR to the woman – and soon realised they were doing the same to the baby.

“They were trying to save their lives as we all stood there powerless to help. It was absolutely gut-wrenching.”

Leicestershire Police said: “Officers were called by East Midlands Ambulance Service shortly before 3pm yesterday afternoon (March 24) to a hotel in the Haymarket Shopping Centre, Leicester.

“The call was made following a newborn baby, who had just been delivered in a hotel room, and that the mother and child were unresponsive.

“Officers attended the scene and both were taken to hospital where sadly they were pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

“The deaths are not being treated as suspicious, but unexplained, while further inquiries are being carried out.”
