Since February 24, there has been no legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive for Covid. However, the government advises that you stay at home ‘if you can’ and to avoid contact with other people.

The government’s advice says that ‘Staying at home until you feel better reduces the risk that you will pass on an illness to your friends, colleagues, and others in your community. This will help reduce the burden on our health services.’

So what are the current rules about what you can and can’t do with Covid?

Although the legal requirement to self-isolate has been removed as part of the Living with Covid plan, people who test positive are still advised to stay at home and avoid contact with other people.

If you have to go for a walk after testing positive for Covid, be sure to wear a mask and stay as far away from other people as possible.

Can you go to work if you have Covid?

Again, the government advises people to stay at home if they test positive, which would mean not going to work.

Even though there is no legal requirement for people in England to self-isolate, individual businesses may have their own policies about staff coming to work with Covid.

Additionally, the Living with Covid plan has impacted Covid-related sick pay rules, which may impact people’s decisions about going to work with Covid.

Can my child go to school with Covid?

As the government advises that people with Covid should stay at home, parents would be advised to keep their children home from school.

While there is no legal requirement for parents to keep their children at home when they have Covid, individual schools can decide to turn children away if they have tested positive or are showing symptoms. 

Can you go to the pub if you have Covid?

Legally, there is nothing stopping someone from going to the pub after testing positive. But a general rule to follow, according to the government’s advice, is that if you have Covid, you should stay home and avoid contact with other people.
