Pistol: John Lydon changing his view is ‘a long shot’ says Danny Boyle

Director Danny Boyle isn’t holding his breath over John Lydon changing his mind over the Sex Pistols biopic.

The 66-year-old singer has been pretty vocal about his dislike of the Disney Plus special, which is based on the memoir of Steve Jones, the legendary Sex Pistols guitarist who helped usher in a punk revolution in Britain, chronicling the band’s early days in West London, their meteoric rise to stardom and their collaboration with iconic fashion designer Dame Vivienne Westwood.

John has criticised the programme on several occasions and hailed it ‘the most disrespectful s***’ he’s ever seen.

During Wednesday’s The One Show, presenters Emma Willis and Jermaine Jenas quizzed Danny about whether the former frontman would change his views on the miniseries.

‘I think it is a long shot,’ Danny quipped.

‘Contrariness is a calling card really, so even if he liked it he will find a way not to. We hope he does because we think it’s very respectful.. and acknowledgement of his genius.’

He continued: ‘He called me the other day, a Boyle on his bum, but we continue to pour the love at him.

‘What he has achieved in musical terms as a big music fan is a big thing for me.’

Danny’s latest claims comes after he revealed he doesn’t actually want the Sex Pistols legend to ‘like’ the  Disney Plus series.

‘I love Lydon for what he does and I don’t want him to like it – I want him to attack it. I think that’s his absolute right,’ he told The Guardian.

‘Why would you change the habit of a lifetime?’

Last year, John aka Johny Rotten lost a lawsuit against his ex-bandmates Steve Jones and Paul Cook, in which he attempted to block the use of the Sex Pistols’ music in the project.

According to the official synopsis, the six-parter ‘guides us through a kaleidoscopic telling of three of the most epic, chaotic and mucus-spattered years in the history of music’ and will also detail Steve’s battle with sex addiction.

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
