When is the Top Gun: Maverick UK release date and who is in the cast?

It’s been nearly forty years since Maverick, Goose and co first got their wings, but they’re starting to feel that need again… the need for speed.

That’s right, the official sequel to the iconic 80s flick, Top Gun, is finally coming in to land – after a few rescheduling issues.

Promising ‘things that have never been done’, anticipation for the film is reaching new altitudes for fans, so how long do they have to wait?

What’s the plot of the Top Gun sequel?

The official synopsis for the film explains: ‘Test pilot Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (Tom Cruise) has purposely dodged an advancement in rank after thirty years of service.’

‘One day Maverick is called to be put in charge of training a group of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission under the orders of his fellow naval aviator friend and former rival, Admiral Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky, who is the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.’

‘Among them is Lieutenant Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s late best friend Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw.’

Who is in the cast for the Top Gun sequel?

The second Top Gun movie has a selection of returning faces, along with some new characters.

Returning from the 1986 original movie are Tom Cruise as Maverick and Val Kilmer as Iceman.

Maverick’s love interest, Charlie (Kelly McGillis) isn’t returning – so Berlin took their breath away for nothing.

Instead, Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind) will be playing his girlfriend.

The film will also introduce Miles Teller (Whiplash, The Fantastic Four), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Glen Powell (Scream Queens), and Jay Ellis (Insecure) to the franchise.

Ed Harris (Glengarry Glen Ross, Stepmom) will also join the cast.  

When is Top Gun: Maverick out?

The film will have its world premiere at CinemaCon on April 28, before its wide release in UK cinemas on May 27.

It was originally expected to be released in July 2019 but was pushed back. At the time, sources attached to the film said it was to ‘allow the production to work out all the complex flight sequences.’

The film was then delayed again by the Covid-19 pandemic and scheduling conflicts.
