Julia Roberts has revealed the reason we haven’t seen her on a romantic comedy for 20 years is to do with taking time out to become a ‘homemaker’ – well, that and the fact she didn’t think any of the scripts she’d seen were up to standard.

The legendary actress, 54, is making her comeback to the genre with flick Ticket to Paradise, which will see her star alongside George Clooney and Kaitlyn Dever.

The mother-of-three is perhaps best known for her work in some of the most iconic rom-coms of all time, including Pretty Woman, My Best Friend’s Wedding and Notting Hill.

However, she hasn’t starred in one since 2001 film America’s Sweethearts.

Now, Julia has opened up about why she stayed away from them for so long, explaining: ‘It’s not just, “Oh, I think I want to do this.” I have a sense of great pride in being home with my family and consider myself a homemaker.

‘For so much of my children’s younger life, they would see their dad go off and I would work a little, but they almost didn’t notice. It was like I was only gone when they were napping or something.

‘But as they get older, and particularly with my daughter, I do have a sense of responsibility for showing my children that I can be creative and that it’s meaningful to me — so meaningful that for periods of time I will choose to focus on that almost more than my family, which has been hard for me to come to terms with.’

Julia has three children with cinematographer husband Danny Moder, who she married in 2002, 17-year-old twins Hazel and Phinnaeus as well as Daniel 14.

She went on to explain that she wasn’t avoiding romantic comedies, she just hadn’t been offered anything she thought was good enough.

Speaking to the New York Times Magazine, she said: ‘But I also had three kids in the last 18 years. That raises the bar even more because then it’s not only “Is this material good?”, it’s also the math equation of my husband’s work schedule and the kids’ school schedule and summer vacation. It’s not just, “Oh, I think I want to do this?”‘

The star added that she hadn’t avoided the genre ‘by design’, but it was simply down to the fact that she hadn’t come across anything that she’d been ‘interested in’.

Julia explained that if she’d read a script that was the level of ‘madcap fun’ that she’d experienced in Notting Hill or My Best Friend’s Wedding, then she would have done it.

However, there just wasn’t the quality until this movie, by Ol Parker, with the star musing it’s ‘a joy to play in that sandbox’ after such a long time.

Ticket to Paradise follows a divorced couple who decide to team up and travel to Bali in order to stop their daughter from making the same mistake they believe they made 25 years ago.

It is directed by Parker and is set to be released by Universal Pictures on October 21, 2022.
